Focus on the journey, not the destination ...
Stretching from New Buffalo to Detroit the US 12 Heritage Trail is the backbone of Southern Michigan and access point for exploration and discovery.
Rich with colorful character, remarkable history and changing landscape the Eastern Tour and Western Tour offer the explorer an opportunity to travel the same path Native Americans traveled on by foot, to rugged pioneers in wagons, to modern-day motorists. All of these travelers have carved their history into the stretch of roadway currently known as the US 12 Heritage Trail.
St. Joseph County is the starting place for both of these tours and is the halfway point between Detroit and Chicago. From the west you can access the US 12 Heritage Trail from several interstates in Michigan. From I 94 take exit into the town of New Buffalo and from I 69 take exit 13 into the town of Coldwater.
